NEWPORT BEACH — It seemed only fitting on a night for celebrating high school tennis that a pair of friendly rivals who motivated, and appreciated each other, shared one of the top awards. University's James MacDonald and Corona del Mar's Niels Hoffmann were paired in the spotlight one more time Thursday, and this time they tied. No tie-breaker needed. MacDonald, a senior, and Hoffmann, a junior, shared the SoCal boys MVP award at the 13th Southern California National High School Tennis All-American awards banquet at the Newport Beach Yacht Club.
